IP Ratings Explained

What is an IP Rating? 

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are standardized codes defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the IEC 60529 standard. These ratings indicate how well an electrical enclosure is protected against the intrusion of solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water). More ”ingress” means more leaking of water or dust into the enclosure.

Understanding IP ratings is crucial when selecting equipment for outdoor environments where exposure to dust, water, and weather elements are a concern.

Types of IP Ratings

An IP rating is written as ’IP’ followed by two digits, such as IP65 or IP68. Each digit represents a specific type and level of protection. The higher the number, the greater the degree of protection.

The first digit indicates protection against solid particles, such as dust or foreign objects. This is rated on a scale of 1 to 6.

• 1 — Protected against objects greater than 50mm (ex: a hand).
• 2 — Protected against objects greater than 12.5mm (ex: a finger).
• 3 — Protected against objects greater than 2.5mm (ex: a screwdriver).
• 4 — Protected against objects greater that 1mm (ex: a wire).
• 5 — Protected against dust with limited ingress, for up to 2-8 hours.
• 6 — Protected against all dust with no ingress, for up to 2-8 hours.

The second digit indicates protection against moisture or water ingress. This is rated on a scale of 1 to 8.

• 1-2 — Protected against vertically falling drops of water.
• 3 — Protected against sprays of water up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
• 4 — Protected against water splashed from all directions.
• 5 — Protected against jets of water.
• 6 — Protected against water from heavy seas of water projected in powerful jets.
• 7-8 — Protected against full immersion into water.
